An Epitome of Sanctity: Tungnath Temple

Chopta Valley gives you the feeling of sanctity, watching the glorious Tungnath temple at the peak of 3680kms which is also the highest Shiva temple in the world. There are many sacred tales related to this temple and it is said that it was built thousand years ago.

Tungnath temple is one of the Panch (five) Kedars of Lord Shiva’s temple in Garhwal Himalayas among Madmaheshwar, Rudranath, Kalpnath and Kedarnath. 

The place is extremely rich in its natural world and is located at a trekking distance of 3.5 km from Chopta that comes under Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. The best time to visit Tungnath temple is in April – November excluding monsoon. 


The trek laid a concrete path from Chopta to Tungnath temple. But then a pot-holed path track exists from there on to Chandrashila. Trekkers complete their trek within 2-3 days if there isn’t snow and to Chnadrashila in about 3-5 hours from Chopta which makes it one of the easy treks in Uttarakhand.
